It suddenly cannot change to 12 bit unless you made some changes. As you conveyed, you changed to continuous burst mode (does not matter if it is L or M)

Even if you are at low speed or medium speed burst mode – it will move to 12 bit compressed RAW. Only in Single-shot mode it will shoot in 14 bit Uncompressed RAW. Please see attached details.

Go for the Sony 200-600 lens which is a must for wildlife / birds. And then based on your budget, go for any of the A7 IV / A7R5 / A9 III / A1

What’s the main reason to move to Sony? Since you do not do wildlife or sports or action photography, you can stick to your current equipment and invest in good lens.

Use the 100-500 and get very close to the cage and click. That will work.

Please watch my course on understanding depth of field. That will help you. Also you cannot focus on multiple subjects in the camera. You need to focus on only subject and then using depth of field, you can get the other one in focus based on the factors affecting DoF.

You can refer the Sony A7 Mk4 for menu options as they are almost the same.

    Hi Vishaka,

I will be arriving at either Sony A1 or the A9 III course soon. Regarding Post Processing, I already have multiple courses on that. A separate course on ACR + Photoshop, Lightroom and also using LR for wildlife images as a part of the wildlife course.

As long as you understand how each of the program mode works, you can use which ever you are comfortable with. Finally all of them will give you the same settings and the same results.

I generally do not like to go with any of the auto mode as I want to be in control all the time.

When you move to mirrorless, it’s not a good option to use the EF lenses on the mirrorless bodies using an adapter. My advice is to go for Sony A7 IV and the Sony 200-600. This is a choice you will never regret and anything else for wildlife photography will be a compromise.
